BURLINGTON, IOWA. – The Illinois State women's golf team concluded day two of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Monday with a team score of 639 (318-321), finishing the day fifth overall at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.
Senior Brianna Cooper continues to lead the Redbirds shooting a 5-over-par in the second round, ending the day with a two-round score of 151 (74-77). Cooper currently sits in second place on the individual leaderboard.
Head coach Darby Sligh knows the team has to take every opportunity presented to make it to the top.
"We were able to hold it together and move up the leaderboard in horrendous conditions," Sligh said. "The teams are still packed in tightly, and we cannot let up for a second tomorrow. Brianna continues to play solid and lead us. We will need everyone to contribute Tuesday to move further up in the standings. Again, anything can happen in the wind, and we must take advantage of any opportunity we get."
Freshman Kiley Walsh carded a two-round score of 160 (77-83), finishing day two tied for 20th place. Senior Hayley Guyton improved her game by shooting a 7-over-par in round two, firing a two-round score of 163 (84-79), and senior Lauren English wasn't far behind, carding a two round score of 165 (83-82). Sophomore Renee Solberg rounded out the Redbird line-up finishing day two with a score of 177 (91-86).
After day two, Wichita State was able to hold onto the top spot with a team score of 612 (301-311). Missouri State was able to climb its way up the leaderboard, claiming second place with a team score of 623 (310-313), while Loyola stayed in third with a team score of 633 (304-329).
Illinois State looks to claim a top-spot in the third and final round of play Tuesday, with tee times starting at 9 a.m. (CST).
