NORMAL, Ill. –The Illinois State women's tennis team fell short to Northern Iowa, 5-2, Saturday afternoon for the first-home conference outdoor match of the season at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts.
Sophomore Natalia Parchowska and freshman Valerija Gercar led the Redbirds in doubles competition, earning the only win in No. 3 doubles over UNI's Sydney Wolfe and Savanna Hunt, 8-2. Meanwhile, junior Kadi Ilves and freshman Donna Haycock suffered a defeat to UNI's Erica Medlin and Elvira Lopez, 8-3, in No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Chanel Scudiero and freshman Catherine Shulman were defeated by UNI's Jieke Stroobant and Astrid Santos, 8-5, in No. 2 doubles.
In singles competition, Parchowska claimed victory over UNI's Hunt, 6-4, 6-1, in No. 6 singles, while Shulman beat UNI's Wolfe, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 5 singles, earning two points for the Redbirds. Meanwhile, in No. 1 singles, Ilves fell to UNI's Medlin, 6-1, 6-4, while Haycock suffered a loss to UNI's Lopez, 7-6, 6-2, in No. 2 singles. Likewise, Scudiero fell short to UNI's Stroobant, 6-3, 6-3, in No. 3 singles, while Gercar suffered a setback to UNI's Santos, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 4 singles.
Next up, the Redbirds will be back on the road for conference play Saturday, April 11, to battle Wichita State in Wichita, Kansas. The competition is set to begin at 10 a.m.
