EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Jakub Eisner went undefeated Friday, going 2-0 in doubles and 1-0 in singles, to lead Illinois State in the Redbird men's tennis team's season opener at the SIUE Fall Invitational.
ISU teamed up to earn a 4-2 doubles record and a 3-4 singles mark in day one of the two-day tournament held at the SIUE Tennis Courts.
"I think today was a good start to the fall," head coach Mark Klysner said. "We started very slow in singles today, but I think it was just the lack of match play and the guys needed some time to get comfortable. We did a better job of that in the second and third sets. Going 4-2 in doubles today was encouraging, as I've been trying some new teams. We'll look to get a quicker start tomorrow and finish the day strong."
After winning his flight-one singles match against Northern Illinois' Simon Formont, 3-6, 7-5, 10-6, Eisner went on to win both of his flight-two doubles matches with partner Egehan Sertkaya. The duo first beat Miguel Flores and David Ferragut of Saint Louis, 8-6, before topping Northern Illinois' Eric Marbach and Louis-Philippe Hamel, 8-7 (10-8).
ISU's other doubles victories included a flight-one win for Rodrigo Oliveira and Andreas Boers over Georg Lundkvist and Kevin Daun of Northern Illinois, 8-6. Christoffer Greve and Dylan Steffens also teamed up to win their flight-three doubles match, beating Saint Louis' Charlie Parry and Brandon Harris, 8-1.
Along with his double victory, Greve earned a flight-four singles win over Northern Illinois' Lundkvist, 6-2, 6-4. ISU's Oliveira also won his flight-two match by besting Hamel of Northern Illinois, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-7.
Illinois State will conclude play in the SIUE Fall Invitational Saturday with 14 singles matches and three doubles matches.
