THE SERIES:
Illinois State and Northern Illinois are meeting for the 24th time in program history, with the Redbirds holding a 16-7 advantage in the all-time series. However, Illinois State is only 3-5 in games played in DeKalb.
THE COACHES:
Illinois State: Barb Smith (Ohio State, 1986) is in her fourth season as the head coach at Illinois State and has the Redbirds off to their first 2-2 start since the 2012-13 season.
NIU: Lisa Carlsen (Northwest Missouri State, 1992) is in her second season as the head coach at Northern Illinois (14-20) and her 14th season overall (198-183) as a head coach, with stops at Lewis University and Omaha.
ILLINOIS STATE:
The Redbirds were picked to finish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference. Illinois State improved to over .500 for the first time since finishing the 2012-13 season 24-11, after the Redbirds handled Valparaiso, 77-56, in their 2016-17 home opener last Saturday, before falling at home Tuesday to Yale, 59-45.
NORTHERN ILLINOIS:
Picked to finish fifth in the six-team Mid-American Conference West Division, the Huskies are off to a 3-1 start, with both home victories coming over Milwaukee (114-104, 2OT) and Chicago State (94-85), with the former visiting Redbird Arena next month. NIU also won at MVC-foe Loyola, 90-70, to start the season, and lost its only contest, 83-79, at Western Illinois, who the Redbirds face on the road five days before Christmas. The Huskies are led by Preseason All-MAC West Team selection Ally Lehman, who leads the Huskies in scoring (21.3), rebounding (12.3), assists (5.8) and steals (2.5). Six players score in double-figures, and Courtney Woods adds 20.0 points per game and has made 15-of-31 triples for NIU, who averages 94.3 points per game.
LOOKING TO START 3-2
A victory over Northern Illinois would give the Redbirds their first 3-2 start since the 2012-13 season when they started out 4-2.
ALL-TIME SEREIS VS THE HUSKIES
Saturday's meeting with Northern Illinois will be the 24th meeting in the all-time series, which dates back to Jan. 8, 1972, when the Redbirds fell at home, 60-38. Illinois State went on to win the next five, eight of nine, nine of 11 and 10 of 13, before constructing another five-game win streak from Dec. 31, 2007 - Nov. 26, 2011. However, the Huskies have won the last three in the series (all over the last three seasons) and the two sides have play every season over 10 of the last 11 years. The Redbirds are only 3-5 all-time in DeKalb.
AGAINST THE HUSKIES IN NOVEMBER
Saturday's meeting with Northern Illinois will be the seventh meeting in the all-time series in games played in the month of November, dating back to Nov. 23, 1999 when the Redbirds escaped with a 65-64 victory at Redbird Arena. Both sides have each won three games, all on their home court. Illinois State has also won both previous meetings taking place Nov. 26 (60-50 in 2005, and 81-62 in 2011).
VERSUS THE MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE
Illinois State holds a 47-23 record against current members of the MAC, with nearly a third of those victories over Northern Illinois (16-7). The last MAC team the Redbirds played not named Northern Illinois was the 2015-16 season opener at Bowling Green when Illinois State was defeated 70-52.
WINNING BACK-TO-BACK NONCONFERENCE ROAD GAMES
A win over Northern Illinois would give Illinois State back-to-back nonconference road wins for the first time since winning at Illinois (69-68 - Dec. 21, 2012) and Butler (65-57 - Dec. 30, 2012).

ISU plays its next 10 games in their home state, with six taking place inside Redbird Arena against the likes of Valparaiso, Yale, Eastern Illinois, Wisconsin, Milwaukee and George Mason. The Redbirds will have the luxury of only having to travel to UIC, Northern Illinois, Western Illinois and SIUE.
UP NEXT
The Redbirds return to Redbird Arena to start a four-game homestand over 11 days when they welcome Eastern Illinois this Thursday, Dec. 1, with tipoff slated for 7 p.m. on Doug Collins Court.
