ORDER OF PLAY
NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State women's tennis team will be hosting the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships in Normal, Illinois, this weekend Oct. 7-9. The championships will take place at Gregory Street Tennis Courts, weather permitting, or the Bloomington Tennis Center.
Along with Illinois State, the tournament includes seven Missouri Valley Conference teams and one affiliate member, competing in this weekend's tournament: Bradley, Drake, Evansville, Missouri State, University of Northern Iowa, Valparaiso and Stony Brook.
The tournament features seven singles flights and three doubles flights. In singles, Veronika Golanova will compete in flight one, Jelena Karla Vujicic in flight two, Jana Kustkova in flight three, Ivon Mihaleva in flight four, Valerija Gercar in flight five and Laura Fitzgerald in flight six.
In doubles, Golanova and Vujicic will contend in flight one, Kustkova and Mihaleva in flight two, and Gercar and Fitzgerald in flight three.
Last year, the Redbirds won a Missouri Valley Conference title in singles and one in doubles. The team also took home two singles third-place titles and two doubles third-place titles. Returning junior Golanova claimed the flight one doubles championship title with graduated partner Marcia Tere-Apisah. Golanova also fought her way to win the flight one singles third-place title.
Kustkova and Gercar successfully fought for two third places titles at the MVC Individual Championship last year. Kustkova claimed third-place in singles flight four and Gercar acquired the singles flight five third-place win. The duo of Kustkova and Vujicic collected third-place in the flight two doubles bracket.
This Illinois State team has had a full week off after participation in the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Illinois, Sept. 22-24. During this time, the team took home nine singles wins and six doubles wins along with two titles in their first tournament of the fall season.
Play will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The MVC Individual Championships will be held at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts if weather permits. For any reason if the weather is unsuitable for play, the tournament will be moved the Bloomington Tennis Center.
