Bloomington, Ill. – The Illinois State men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Eastern Illinois Saturday afternoon at the Bloomington Tennis Center, improving the squad's record to an even 3-3.
Saturday's match featured wins from Dylan Steffens, Andreas Boers, Egehan Sertkaya, Matias Chomali, Peter Foersom and the doubles team of Steffens and Sertkaya.
"It was nice to get a win today on our first home match of the year," said head coach Mark Klysner. "We started very slow in doubles, and it took a while for the guys to get their feet under them, and while we are trying some different doubles pairings, we need to improve. Singles was great, and the guys turned up the intensity and focus, and we played more like how we are capable of playing."
Eastern Illinois claimed the doubles point, as Boers and Urh Krajnc Domiter fell to Eastern Illinois' Freddie O'Brien and Gage Kingsmith 6-2 and Chomali and Foersom fell to Grant Reiman and Trent Reiman, 6-4. The doubles team of Steffens and Sertkaya defeated Jacob Wendell and Jared Woodson 6-3.
In singles play, the Redbirds went 5-1 over EIU. Krajnc Domiter fell to Freddie O'Brien in a three set match, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5. Steffens defeated Grant Reiman, 6-1, 6-2. Boers defeated Jared Woodson, 6-1, 6-1. Sertkaya defeated Marko Stefan Janjusic, 6-4, 6-4. Chomali defeated Gage Kingsmith, 6-2, 6-3 and Foersom defeated Trent Reiman, 7-5, 6-3.
