LINCOLN, Neb. – The Illinois State women's tennis team fell, 4-1, against Houston Saturday as the two teams competed at a neutral site in Nebraska.
In doubles action, Illinois State claimed two out of three matches claiming the overall doubles point, but it was not enough to put the team ahead. Marcia Tere-Apisah and Jelena Karla Vujicic took down Tsveta Dimitrova and Ana Glumac, 6-4. No. 2 doubles pair, Gabriela Sprague and Jana Kustkova also defeated their opponents, Constandena Nicolaou and Cristina Rovira, 6-2. Valerija Gercar and Andrea Beneroso came up short against Lauren Alter and Sveva Mazzari, 6-1.
In singles play, the Redbirds went 0-4 and did not finish two matches. Tere-Apisah fell, 6-5, 6-0, to Dimitrova, while Vujicic also fell short to Mazzari, after playing a tiebreaker set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Kustkova did not finish her match against Rovira, 3-6, 7-6(2), 5-1. Sprague also played a tiebreaker set, but was unable to finish due to Houston clinching the match. She competed against Alter (6-3, 3-6, 2-5). Gercar battled but came up short to Nicolaou, 6-3, 7-5. Beneroso took on Glumac but fell short, 6-4, 6-1.
Illinois State, now 5-6 this season, will take on Nebraska Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Huskers' home facility, the Dillon Tennis Center. Nebraska defeated Houston earlier Saturday, 4-0, improving their record 13-0 this season.
