LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Though play was suspended due to darkness, the Redbirds had a strong first day at the Little Rock Invitational. Illinois State has up to two holes left to finish in the second round.
Before the second round was stopped, Illinois State was in second place, one stroke behind 23rdranked UNLV in first. The Redbirds scored 290 (+2) at the end of the first round and were shooting at even par before the end of the day. Illinois State is five strokes ahead of 19thranked Arkansas State and seven strokes ahead of Arizona.
Senior Trent Wallace leads the tournament in first place and is working to become the second student-athlete in tournament history to earn back-to-back medalist honors, the other being Gideon Penaar of Central Arkansas. At four strokes under par, Wallace has one more hole to finish up in the second round, after shooting a two-under 20 over the first 18 holes
Senior David Raueralso had a strong opening round, scoring two-under par with four birdies. In the second round, he has kept even overall and has an overall even par score and is tied for eighth with two holes to go in the second round.
Coming off of a medalist honor last week and MVC Golfer of the Week honors, junior Joel Durnford continues to play well. Other than one birdie and one bogey, Durnford has shot even in the second round and still has one hole remaining.
Junior David Perkins opened strong in the second round, shooting four birdies in the first seven holes. Perkins is currently even for the second round and four strokes over overall with two holes left in the round.
Sophomore Daniel Anfieldfinished the day two-over par in the second round with one hole remaining. Anfield is 10 strokes over par overall.
The remaining holes for all schools will be completed in the morning. After a brief break to re-cut the greens, the squads will be re-paired for the final 18-holes of the tournament.
