Redbirds Earn Second-Straight Home Win Against Oakland

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State women's basketball captured its second-straight home victory, as they defeated Oakland 62-56 on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Illinois State began the first period on a 15-0 run and held Oakland to its second lowest score in a quarter this season with five points.  The Redbirds shot 50 percent from the field, held Oakland to a 15 percent field goal percentage and finished the quarter ahead 18-5.

The Golden Grizzlies outscored Illinois State 16-10 in the second to tighten the gap at half 28-21. Simone Goods led the Redbirds in rebounds with eight and TeTe Maggett led all scorers with seven points.

A pair of Redbirds added a free-throw shot to open the third quarter with a 31-20 lead. The Redbirds went 5-for-8 in the third from the charity stripe, but never gave the Grizzlies an opportunity.  Oakland came within four, but could not find a way to lead. Illinois State entered the final quarter up 43-32.

Oakland went to the line a total of nine times, six of which, came in the fourth quarter. With 1:07 remaining, Illinois State led by only two possessions. Viria Livingston pushed the Redbird lead to seven as she added one at the line with 32 seconds on clock. Oakland attempted a last minute comeback as Chloe Guingrich added a layup moments later. To spare time, the Grizzlies fouled and sent Katrina Beck to shoot. She added one and the Redbirds led 60-54. The Grizzlies added another layup from Guingrich, but time was out. Beck netted both of her final free-throw shots to secure another Redbird win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • For the second-straight game, Maggett led all scorers with 20 points. The junior guard also dished out three assists, five rebounds and one steal.  
  • Goods added her second double-double this season with 11 points, and tied her career high of 14 rebounds.
  • Tonight's 13 points from Beck ties her season high. The senior guard also grabbed four steals and four boards.
  • This is the second time this season Illinois State has made 20 free-throws.
  • Oakland's Chloe Guingrich added all of her 11 points in the final period and led the team in rebounds with nine.
  • Myka Cromwell led the Golden Grizzlies with 13 points.

The Illinois State women's basketball team will remain in Normal as they host Austin Peay on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
