MOUNT PLEASANT, Michigan – The Illinois State gymnastics team continued its road swing to start the 2019 season, competing away from home for the third time Friday night at Central Michigan as the Chippewas defeated the Redbirds 195.275-190.050 at McGuirk Arena.
Redbird Scoring Breakdown:
• Vault: CMU – 48.675, ISU – 46.525
• Bars: CMU – 48.750, ISU – 47.700
• Beam: CMU – 48.800, ISU – 47.825
• Floor: CMU – 49.100, ISU – 48.000
Thoughts From Coach Bob Conkling:
"The team did not perform up to their capabilities tonight and we have some work to do in the gym this week to help improve their confidence. We did have some highlights, as freshman Mia Quigg was solid on all routines of her routines tonight and senior Kylie Meyer also went 3-for-3. Meredith LaRoche also won vault against a very strong CMU team, so we have some things to build on before our next meet at Iowa State."
Team Notes:
• The Redbirds had their strongest turn of the night on floor, scoring a 48.000 after a solid turn on beam
• A tough rotation on vault, despite an individual event win, put the Redbirds in an early hole and the Chippewas continued their strong start to the season to win each rotation against the Redbirds
Gymnast Notes:
• LaRoche picked up the only individual event win for the Redbirds against the Chippewas, finishing first with a score of 9.775
• Quigg had a standout performance on beam, scoring a career-best 9.750 to place fourth overall … Quigg also competed on bars and floor to round out a solid night for the Redbirds
• Junior Gabrielle Cooke, the reigning Midwest Independent Conference gymnast of the week, took second in the all-around with a score of 38.100 thanks to a score of 9.775 on the floor
Up Next:
• The Redbirds complete the road swing to start the season on Friday, Jan. 18, for a meet at Iowa State at 6:30 p.m.
