ABOUT THE COUGHLAN-MALLOY CUP
The Coughlan-Malloy Cup is named for legendary head coaches Bill Malloy (Indiana State) and John Coughlan (Illinois State). Coughlan spent 23 years coaching men's and women's track & field and cross country at ISU, taking the program to new heights. He has since been inducted into the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame and the Illinois State Athletics Percy Hall of Fame.
The Coughlan-Malloy Cup is given to the winner of the combined men's and women's team scores at the meet. Since the cup's founding in 2005, the Sycamores have held the overall advantage over the Redbirds, winning the meet 12 times.
However, the Redbirds turned the tables last year, defeating Indiana State by a score of 154-148 to hoist the Coughlan-Malloy cup for the first time since 2006. The 'Birds will look to win the cup in back-to-back years for the first time in program history Saturday.
FACES TO WATCH
At the 2018 Coughlan-Malloy Cup, Demetria Anderson won the 60-meter hurdles in style, setting a meet record of 8.52. The senior, who is also the ISU school-record holder in the event (8.33), will look to re-break her own mark this weekend.
Seniors Ben Montgomery and Ashleigh Wilson also excelled at last year's meet, each winning the 400-meter dash. Wilson will once again compete in the 400-meter Saturday, while Montgomery will race in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes.
After winning the mile run with the ninth-fastest time in all of Division I (4:53.11) at the Jimmy Grant Invite, reigning MVC Track Athlete of the Week Grace Beattie will be back in action this weekend. Beattie won the 3,000-meter run at the Coughlan-Malloy Cup in 2018 and will look to do the same this year.
Pole vaulters Kellen Kravik and Ariana Cranston will aim to reach new heights this weekend after sweeping the pole vault competition at last year's meet against the Sycamores. Cranston recently won the pole vault at the Jimmy Grant Invite, clearing an indoor personal-best 3.80m (12-05.50) to improve to fourth all-time on Illinois State's top-10 list.
Charde Golliday will also be one to keep an eye on after capturing second place finishes in the long jump (5.76m/18-10.75) and triple jump (12.08m/39-08.50) at the Jimmy Grant Invite.
