CINCINNATI, Ohio – Illinois State senior David Perkins continued his torrid start to the 2019-20 season by recording his ninth sub-par score of the season, as the Redbirds placed in a tie of seventh place at the 2019 Bearcat Invitational.
Over his nine rounds this season he has been under par in each and is averaging 68.6 strokes per round this season. He closed the tournament ranked third individually with a three-round score of 202 (-11).
Louisville ran away with the team title at the event, carding a three-round 815, 37 strokes under par. Arkansas took third with a -11 final score with Kentucky rounding out the top three with a two-over final score. Penn State took fourth place, which also ended a stretch of over a year which the Redbirds did not finish behind a team from the Big Ten – the last time coming on April 1, 2016.
Perkins carded five birdies on his round, including two different stretches of back-to-back holes with a birdie, to finish with his four-under 67. Only Louisville's John Murphy (-17) and Matthias Schmid (-14) finished ahead of him in the individual standings.
Freshman Felix van Dijk was the second-best finisher for the Redbirds with a three-over 74. van Dijk had three birdies on the day to go with 10 pars. For the tournament his seven-over total score has him tied for 39th in the field.
Junior Dan Anfield and freshman Parker Wisdom tied for the third and fourth spots on the team, each carding a four-over 75 on the day. Anfield had three birdies on the round in addition to nine pars. Wisdom had 15 pars and finished the tournament tied for 67th.
Senior Joel Durnford had a birdie and nine pars on the day en route to finishing eight strokes over par on the day, and 15 over for the tournament, placing 66th.
After two weekends off, Illinois State returns to action on Oct. 21 to compete at the Little Rock Intercollegiate in Little Rock, Arkansas.
