Mobile, Ala. – A strong second round led by David Perkins and Joel Durnford puts the Redbirds tied for seventh at the end of the first day. This was the squads first tournament outing of the spring season.
Illinois State finished the first round eight strokes over par (296) on the 72-par course. Despite the score and a 13th out of 15 place start, the Redbirds managed to shoot five strokes under par in the second round and moved up six places.
Juniors David Perkins and Joel Durnford led the second round for Illinois State. Durnford shot three under par (69) in the round and is shooting one under par for both rounds. Perkins shot one under in both rounds. He is tied for 17th individually with seven other golfers.
Senior Trent Wallace finished day one two strokes above par. Wallace shot an even par in the second round, including three birdies. He currently is tied for 39th. Senior David Rauer shot one under par in the second round and has 148 (77-71) total. Sophomore Daniel Anfield finished the first day with a score of 153 (78-75).
"I was very pleased with the team effort in round two & encouraged by our move up the leaderboard," head coach Ray Kralis stated after the second round. "We dug ourselves a little hole in the morning as a few slipped away, but that can happen coming out of our winter. We're looking forward to building on the momentum from this afternoon and finishing strong tomorrow".
Illinois State will play the final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate tomorrow with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CST.
