NORMAL, Ill. – The Redbird men's and women's track and field and cross country teams, who were named the 2018 MVC Program of the Year, will host two summer camps for student-athletes grades 6-12 on July 14-17, 2019. Campers, who can register individually or as a team, will have the option to partake in the Redbirds' track & field camp or distance camp. Both camps have an overnight or commuter option.
Instruction at both camps will be provided by Illinois State's top-notch coaching staff, including Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jeff Bovee and assistant coaches Jon-Michael Brandt, Rodney Burkes, Daniel Gooris, and Jeff Rebholz. Campers will also get to learn from the Redbird track & field student-athletes themselves!
The distance camp is designed to educate young runners on how to train smarter, while simultaneously improving overall fitness and speed. Individuals and teams will have the opportunity to learn proper training techniques, enhance their performance, and improve their biomechanics, all while being surrounded by a fun and exciting atmosphere.
The track & field camp will cover a wide range of topics across multiple events, focusing on sprints, hurdles, throws, pole vault, horizontal jumps (long jump and triple jump), and high jump. Participants will be able to choose the event areas in which they would like to be trained on the camp registration form. In addition to specialized-event sessions, all campers will learn about technical training theories, strength and conditioning, and nutrition.
The different event groups at the track & field camp will focus on the following:
Sprints/Hurdles – Sprinters and hurdlers will be taught the technical fundamentals of these events, as well as the psychological aspects of training.
Throws – Throwers will learn the shot glide, shot rotation, and discus techniques, as well as being introduced to the hammer throw and javelin.
Jumps – Jumpers will be taught the technical fundamentals of whichever jumping event(s) they choose, in addition to receiving mental training.
Pole Vault – Pole vaulters will focus on the proper progression and intermediate drills. Pole vault will be limited to the first 20 campers that register. Campers are encouraged to bring their own poles.
Both the distance camp and track & field camp will run from July 14-17, and have a registration deadline of June 30. The cost of the camp is $375 for individual overnight campers. However, team overnight campers (4+ athletes from the same team of the same gender) receive a discounted price of $350 per camper. To receive the team price, all registrations must be completed or mailed in together.
Individual commuter campers will be charged $300, and team commuter campers will be charged $275 per camper. The same rules apply for the team commuter camper as were explained above for the team overnight camper.
