VALPARAISO, Ind. – Simone Goods secured a career high 30 points, guiding the Redbirds to a 70-67 win over the Valparaiso Crusaders.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Redbirds kept a lead for the majority of the first quarter, with Valpo only pulling ahead with a minute of playing time. Freshman guard Kayel Newland was featured in the starting lineup for the first time in her career and collected three points after being fouled under the basket. Valparaiso cut the deficit to one with 12 seconds to play, as Ilyse Pitts added a shot at the charity stripe. Redbirds entered the second quarter up, 15-14.
The hot-shooting Redbirds could not be stopped in the second quarter and pushed their lead to 39-28. ISU netted 15-of-22 shots from the field, averaging 68.2 percent at halftime. Valparaiso attempted more shots (8-for-27), but could not overcome the Redbird defense.
Illinois State extended its lead to 48-31 with three minutes into the third. Valpo responded with a 13-0 run to come within single digits. Paige Saylor put an end to the 'Birds' scoring drought as she drained three to keep ISU ahead 51-44 with 3:04 to play in the third quarter. The Redbirds surged ahead as Ally Gietzel closed out the quarter with a jump-shot and ISU led 58-53 as they entered the final period.
Valparaiso played a close game for the entirety of the fourth quarter, but could not overcome the resilient Redbirds. The game came down to the wire with just over a minute to play. The Crusaders sank their 13th 3-pointer with 1:32 remaining in regulation to come within one. The Redbirds missed their next attempt, and the Crusaders had possession with under a minute left. Simone Goods blocked VU's next shot and ISU hustled down the court, but were unsuccessful. Valpo attempted two layups and fouled Katrina Beck on the second rebound. Beck sank both free-throws, securing a 70-67 gap with one second on the clock. Time expired and ISU snapped their three-game losing streak, downing Valpo 70-67
