NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State women's basketball assistant coach Scott Gillespie was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 presented by Marriott Bonvoy, announced by the WBCA Wednesday.
Gillespie joined ISU's staff in May of 2017 after a three-year stint as an assistant men's basketball coach at IUPUI in Indianapolis, Indiana. In his fifth year as a NCAA Division I assistant coach, Gillespie has been a key component to the programs' growing success. Each of the three years that Gillespie was on staff at IUPUI, the Jaguars increased their win totals. This year was no different for him, helping ISU to its first winning season since 2012-13.
"Scott is such an integral part of our program," Coach Kristen Gillespie said. "He is a tireless worker and recruiter, an outstanding teacher of the game and a great role model for our student athletes. He is a rising star in this profession and we are lucky that he is a Redbird."
Gillespie is the second coach on head coach Kristen Gillespie's staff to receive the honor, after assistant coach Jessica Keller claimed the award in 2016.
The WBCA Thirty Under 30 program was created to recognize 30 up-and-coming women's basketball coaches age 30 and under at all levels of the game. Each honoree has exemplified their involvement in community service, mentorship and impact on others, professional manner, and attitude and professional association involvement.
