Redbirds Battle Back to Defeat Northern Illinois

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State gymnastics battled back and forth to take the lead in the final rotation to defeat the Huskies with a final score of 193.625-193.400.


Scoring Breakdown:
•    Vault: NIU 48.725, ISU 48.225
•    Bars: ISU 48.775, NIU 47.550
•    Beam: NIU 48.350, ISU 47.725
•    Floor: ISU 48.900, ISU 48.775


Thoughts from Coach Bob Conkling:
"The meet was very exciting and was back and forth the entire time. I think that after every event the score switched who was a head. I felt like it was an exciting meet and I am glad we came out with a win, but it could have gone either way. I think the crowd enjoyed it and I do not think anyone realized who won until the score came up at the end."
    
Team Notes:
•    The Redbirds took the lead after the first rotation with three gymnasts scoring over 9.700, NIU trails 47.550-48.225.
•    After the second rotation the Redbirds continued the lead over NIU 97.000- 96.275 … ISU and NIU tied with two gymnasts from both teams scoring 9.825 on bars.
•    The Redbirds had two gymnasts score over 9.775 on the third rotation, but that was not strong enough and ISU trailed 145.050-144.725, at the end of the event.
•    The Redbirds competed strong on floor with four gymnasts scoring over 9.775, taking the victory over NIU.


Gymnast Notes:
•    Freshman Angelica Labat competed strong on vault to post a career -high 9.800 to place second in the event … Labat tied for first on bars with a career-high score 9.825 … she finished the competition strong with a second-place finish on floor and posted a 9.850.
•    Senior Gabrielle Cooke tied her career-high score on bars with a 9.825 to tie for first in the event … Cooke competed strong on vault and posted a season-high 9.725 to finish fifth … she finished third on beam with a season-high score 9.775.
•    Junior Savannah Remkus posted a season-high 9.825 on beam to tie for the event win.
•    Junior Triniti Barron received a career-high 9.825 to finish third on floor.
