NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State gymnastics team posted a season-high team score of 194.350 last weekend and as a result two of its gymnasts were honored for their performances in that meet, as freshman Angelica Labat and senior Gabrielle Cooke earned Midwest Independent Conference weekly honors Wednesday.
For the fourth time this season, Labat was honored by the Midwest Independent Conference this time as the league's Gymnast of the Week. She has twice been given Performance of the Week honors and earned Newcomer of the Week honors thanks to her effort her against Northern Illinois earlier this season.Â
Last Saturday in Bowling Green, Ohio, Labat scored a career-high 9.925 on vault to win the event and picked up a win on bars by tying her career-high of 9.875. The Chesapeake, Virginia, native also posted a 9.825 on floor to tie for third overall, and all those scores combined helped her win the all-around title with a career-high score of 39.325.
Cooke was honored with the Performance of the Week award, thanks to a stellar effort on the floor in the tri-meet for the Redbirds against Bowling Green and Temple. The Chicago, Illinois, native scored a season-high 9.875 on floor to tie for the event win and help the Redbirds post their team season-best score. She also matched her career-high with a 39.250 in the all-around to finish second in that competition behind Labat.
The Redbirds hit the road again on Friday, Feb. 21, for the Pink Invitational meet at Pennsylvania Convention Center where they will compete against Temple, West Chester, Southern Connecticut and Ursinus at 6 p.m.
