Labat, Iribarren Earn MIC Weekly Honors

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State freshman Angelica Labat and sophomore Sofia Iribarren both had strong performances for the Redbird gymnastics team last week and for their efforts, each earned recognition from the Midwest Independent Conference on Wednesday.

For the fifth time this season, Labat was honored by the Midwest Independent Conference this time as the league's Newcomer of the Week for the second time. The Chesapeake, Virginia, native tied for second on bars with a 9.875 and third on beam with a 9.775 for the Redbirds in Philadelphia at the Pink Invitational last Friday. Add in a 9.825 on floor and Labat recorded a total of 38.625 in the all-around to finish third overall.

For the first time this season, Iribarren was recognized by the MIC with Performance of the Week honors. The Madrid, Spain, native tied her career-high score of 9.875 on bars to tie for second in the meet along with Labat. She also competed in the all-around for the second time this season, scoring a career-high and finishing fourth with a total of 38.550.

The Redbirds return home on Friday, Feb. 28, to honor their five seniors on Senior Night inside Horton Field House in a dual meet against BYU at 7 p.m.
