Perkins Finishes Even Par as Redbirds Close in 12th at Mobile Bay Intercollegiate

MOBILE, Ala. – Illinois State senior David Perkins carded an even-par 72 on the third and final day of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate to lead the Redbirds, as ISU remained in its spot in the team standings, closing the three-day tournament in 12th place overall with a final-round score of 295, and the tournament in 889 (300, 294, 295).

The Redbirds finished ahead of Southern Miss, the South Alabama "B" squad, and Michigan, while finishing just behind Lipscomb. Illinois won the event with a final-round 277 (-11), finishing the tournament 37 strokes under par with an 827. Indiana (844), Kent State (848), Louisville (850), and UAB (852) rounded out the top five schools in the field.

"This was not the finish we were looking for," said ISU head men's golf coach Ray Kralis. "The coach in me knows we need to take the positives and learn from our mistakes; but the competitor in me is very aware results matter and today's performance was unacceptable. Thankfully, we are scheduled to start over at zero next Monday."

Perkins – who started his day on the 10th hole, opened strong with birdies on his second, fifth, and seventh holes – and had pars on the remaining six holes – heading into the turn three strokes under par. He picked up a par in the opening hole of his back nine before three bogeys in his next five holes dropped his score back to even par. He closed the tournament with three consecutive pars, closing the round with an even-par 72, and a three-round score of 223, tied for 53rd in the field.

Felix van Dijk also opened his final round of the tournament on the 10th hole, and a birdie over the first five holes dropped his day score to a stroke under par. He closed the opening nine holes with a pair of bogeys, making the turn at a stroke over par. Heading into his back nine (the front nine on the golf course), he opened with three consecutive pars before birdies on the fourth and sixth holes once again dropped his score to under par. A par on the seventh hole kept him under par; however, a finish with a double bogey and par ended his day with a one-over 73, closing the tournament with a seven-over 223, tied with Perkins and five others for 53rd place in the field.

Dan Anfield – Illinois State's scoring leader over the first two rounds of the tournament – started play on the 9th hole, and opened with a bogey, before putting up a par on each of the next six holes. In the middle of the round he stubbed his toe with three bogeys over a five-hole span, pushing his score to +4 on the day. Birdies on the fourth and sixth holes cut that aggregate score in half, before settling at a three-over 75 with a bogey on his final hole of the tournament. His three-round 219 (+3) ended up split for the 39th-best score in the field.

For a second straight round, senior Andrew O'Brien carded a three-over 75, and picked up three birdies on the day, his most in a round in the tournament. He opened on the 12th hole and started with back-to-back bogeys. He righted the ship with two birdies and five pars over his next seven holes, pushing his score back to even par. After a bogey on the course's third hole, he answered with five more pars to stay at a stroke over par through 15 holes. His final three holes were a mix of up and down, as he closed with a double bogey, bogey, and birdie to finish with the 75, and three-round score of 231, which is tied for 75th.

Senior Joe Hodgson ended his tournament with a nine-over 81, including a birdie and nine pars, closing the tournament with a three-round 235, tied for 80th overall.

After two strong rounds to open his collegiate career playing as an individual, freshman Jack Paeglow closed his opening tournament with an 8-over 80, including a birdie 11 pars. His final round score gave him a three-round total of 231, which along with O'Brien, is tied for 75th in the strong field.

The Redbirds return back to the course on Monday, February 22 as the squad travels to Laredo, Texas, to compete in the Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston.
