NORMAL, Ill. – Fifth-year senior Sydney Laufenberg is set to throw the discus at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Friday, June 18 at 6 p.m. Central Time (4 p.m. Pacific Time) at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Last time out, Laufenberg placed fifth overall in the discus throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a personal-best mark of 58.02 meters (190-4 ft.), breaking her own school record in the process.
Laufenberg notched First Team All-America honors for her historic performance, becoming the first women's discus thrower in school history to accomplish the feat. She also posted the highest finish of any Missouri Valley Conference athlete at the meet with the fifth-place finish.
Former Redbird Curt Jensen (2009-2014) will also be in action at the Trials, competing in the men's shot put, as he currently ranks 10th nationally in the event. The qualifying round is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Central Time (12:00 p.m. Pacific Time). The shot put finals will take place later at 8:30 p.m. Central Time (6:30 p.m. Pacific Time). Jensen is still the school record hoolder in both the indoor and outdoor shot put at Illinois State.
