EAST LANSING, Mich. – Coming off a season-opening tri-meet at nationally-ranked Missouri last weekend, Illinois State hits the road again this weekend for another tough task with a tri-meet against Big Ten Conference foe Michigan State and Bowling Green on Saturday at Jenison Field House. The meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network +.
"The team has looked strong and ready in workouts this week," ISU head coach Bob Conkling said. "We are excited to have another chance to show everyone just how good we can be this season."
The Redbirds came in third with a team score of 191.600 last weekend against the Tigers and Cardinals in the season opener. ISU received several strong individual performances during the meet, including a career-best tying effort on beam from 2021 All-MIC First Team selection Madison Kipp with a 9.850. Reigning MIC champion on bars Sofia Iribarren posted a top 10 finish on floor with a 9.725 and 2021 MIC All-Around champion Angelica Labat led the way for the 'Birds on bars with a score of 9.750 to finish in a tie for sixth place.
Michigan State opened the 2022 season with a tri-meet victory on the road last weekend, posting a team score of 195.875 in the meet with host UC Davis and Sacramento State. The team's final score was the highest season-opening score in program history for the second year in a row. The Spartans won or shared the top spot in all four individual events and posted the two best all-around scores in the meet, led by sophomore Delanie Harkness with a 39.175. Freshman Skyla Schulte came in second overall with a 39.125, which earned her Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
Bowling Green placed third last Friday night in a tri-meet at North Carolina to open the season. No. 14 Auburn won the meet with a score of 196.30, host UNC posted a score of 195.700 and BGSU finished with a score of 192.600. The Falcons were led by Taylor Jensen, who tied Auburn's Derrian Gobourne with the top score on floor at 9.875, and had the fourth-best all-around score of the night at 38.700.Â
