Redbirds Travel to Indiana State for 17th annual Coughlan-Malloy Cup

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State track & field is set to travel to Terre Haute, Indiana for the 17th annual Coughlan-Malloy Cup, a dual meet between the Redbirds and Indiana State, on Saturday, Jan. 15. The action from the Indiana State Indoor Track & Field Complex is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. ET with field events. Track events will begin at 1:30 p.m. ET.

COUGHLAN-MALLOY CUP

The Coughlan-Malloy Cup is named after legendary head coaches John Coughlan (Illinois State) and Bill Malloy (Indiana State). In his 23-year tenure at Illinois State, Coughlan won 18 Missouri Valley Conference team titles. For his success, he earned spots in both the MVC Hall of Fame and the Illinois State Athletics Percy Family Hall of Fame.

The Coughlan-Malloy Cup is unique in that the men's and women's team scores are combined into an overall score and the team with the highest combined total wins the traveling trophy. Since the cup's founding in 2005, the Sycamores have held the overall advantage over the Redbirds, winning the meet 12 times. However, the Redbirds have won the last three meetings in the dual, dating back to the 2018 season.

At the last Coughlan-Malloy Cup in 2020, the Redbirds topped the Sycamores, 186-138, at Horton Fieldhouse. In total, Illinois State captured 19 individual event wins, 12 on the women's side and seven on the men's side. In addition, both the men and women's 4x400m relay teams won.

BLUE DEMON HOLIDAY INVITE

Illinois State last competed at the Blue Demon Holiday Invite in December, where the team captured eight event wins and set four program top-10 marks. Event winners included Grace Daun (High Jump), Destiny White (400m), Cecil Brownridge III (400m), Arianna Walker (200m), Logan Calvin (Shot Put & Weight Throw), Mye'Joi Williams (Shot Put) and Matt Blanco (3000m).

Brownridge III notched a program top-10 mark with his win in the men's 400m dash. His time of 48.35 ranks tenth in school history.

In the women's 200m dash, Walker won in a time of 24.54 to break into the program record book, now holding the ninth fastest time in school history.

Senior Nick Swartzendruber finished the men's 600m run in a time of 1:19.51 to finish second overall. Swartzendruber's time ranks fourth in program history in the event.

With a clearance of 3.65m (11-11.75 ft.) in the women's pole vault, Amni Austin is tied for seventh in school history in the event.

WEEKLY AWARDS

Following a Redbird sweep of the MVC weekly honors in the first week of competition, senior thrower Logan Calvin was named the MVC Male Field Athlete of the Week for the second straight week after he swept both events he competed in, the shot put and weight throw, at the Blue Demon Holiday Invite.

For the eighth time in his collegiate career, Calvin has won MVC weekly honors, having been named Male Field Athlete of the Week twice during his sophomore campaign, four times last season and already twice this season.
