West Lafayette, Ind. - Two school records came down as Illinois State Swimming and Diving closed out its fall slate at the Purdue Invitational this week. The Redbirds posted a solid showing in what was a strong field of competition in West Lafayette.
Perhaps the highlight of the week for Illinois State came Thursday as senior Madyson Morse broke the 100-yard breaststroke school record two times. Morse recorded a time of 1:01.90 in the prelims Wednesday morning to break Jensen Keck's 2017 mark of 1:02.32. Later in the day she bested the school record yet again as she improved to a 1:01.70 and finished seventh in the A-final of the 100-yard breaststroke.
Morse also swam the first leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay as the Redbirds set a new school mark of 1:33.71 to finish eighth in that event. She was joined by Ella Turken, Mia Snow and Olivia Gonder, who teamed up to bring down a record of 1:33.77 that was set last season by Morse, Gonder, Emma Feltzer and Diana Walker.
Other Highlights:
- Morse set a new season best in the 200 IM finals during the Day One prelims. She recorded a 2:04.66 for a season-best mark that positioned her in the B-final Wednesday night, where she finished 7th with a 2:04.29.
- Eva Reyes secured a spot in both the 1M and 3M finals at Purdue. On Wednesday, she recorded a 261.55 in the 3M prelims before she finished ninth in the finals with an overall score of 276.75. In 1M Thursday, Reyes finished 10th in the finals with a mark of 245.90. She scored a 255.50 in the prelims Thursday morning.
- Chloe Tyler, Morse, Giulia Basco and Gonder recorded a season best for Illinois State 400-yard medley relay as the Redbirds posted a time of 3:45.83 to finish 11th Wednesday night.
- Ria Dietz, Morse, Basco and Turken also posted a season best for the Redbirds with a time of 1:41.82 in the 200-yard medley relay Thursday night.
- In the 400-yard freestyle relay on Friday, Morse, Chloe Tyler, Snow and Gonder set a Redbirds season best with their sixth-place time of 3:26.12.
- Morse also swam for Illinois State in the 100-yard butterfly B-final Thursday night, where she recorded a 55.77 to finish fifth. She recorded a season best in the 200-yard breaststroke B-final with a time of 2:16.55.
- Cassidy Carey set a new season bests in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke at Purdue. She swam to a season-low of 56.42 in the 100 prelims to earn a spot in the B-Final Thursday, where she finished eighth with a mark of 56.58. In the 200 on Friday, she recorded new season best of 2:01.82 in the prelims, before beating that time in B-final with a 2:00.72.
- Freshman Giulia Basco also set a season best in the 200-yard butterfly prelims Friday. She finished with a time of 2:05.01 to secure a B-finals spot.
