Labat, Laster Repeat As Weekly MIC Honorees

NORMAL, Ill. – It was déjà vu in the Midwest Independent Conference this week, as Angelica Labat and Alana Laster each won weekly awards for the second-straight week following their strong performances over the weekend. Labat was once again named the MIC Gymnast of the Week and Laster repeated at the MIC Newcomer of the Week.

The gymnast of the week honor for Labat is her fourth of the season, third in as many weeks, and is her tenth overall in her ISU career. The honor for Laster is the second in her young career at ISU.

Labat powered to a season-high score of 39.325 to win the all-around title on Friday night at the GymQuarters Invite quad meet against Iowa State, Lindenwood and Southeast Missouri. That was helped by a season-best 9.900 on vault to place second overall and a top-5 finish on beam with a 9.800. Then on Sunday, Labat scored 39.225 in the all-around to finish just ahead of Laster in the dual meet at Lindenwood. That victory was aided by a season-high 9.925 score on vault to place first and a tie for second place on beam with a 9.775. Overall, Labat has now won the all-around in five straight meets and has won the event in eight meets this season.

Laster recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the all-around for the Redbirds last weekend. On Friday at the GymQuarters Invitational, Laster recorded a score of 38.550 to finish behind Labat. Her best performance of the night was a 9.850 on vault, which tied her for sixth place overall. That score in turn helped the Redbirds break the school record on the event with a 49.350. On Sunday against Lindenwood, Laster once again was strong in the all-around and posted a career-high score of 39.100 to place second behind Labat once again. That score was aided by another strong vault of 9.900 which placed her second overall, and she also added top-5 finishes on beam (9.750) and floor (9.775).

The Redbirds next hit the road on Friday, February 25, to compete in a dual meet against MIC foe Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau at 6:30 p.m.
