NORMAL, Ill. – A season-high team score and career bests all over the arena resulted in Illinois State picking up a win last weekend at Bowling Green and earning a pair of Midwest Independent Conference weekly honors for Redbird gymnasts. For the second time this season, Angelica Labat was named the MIC Gymnast of the Week and Madison Kipp took home MIC Performance of the Week honors for their efforts in the ISU victory, the league announced on Wednesday.
The MIC Gymnast of the Week honor is the second for Labat this season and the eighth of her career. Labat previously won following a strong all-around performance at Michigan State in January. The honor is the first for Kipp in her career and brings the total of 2022 MIC weekly awards for ISU gymnasts to four, with Jaye Mack also previously honored as the MIC Newcomer of the Week.
Labat earned her third all-around win of the year, finishing ahead of three other gymnasts in first place with a season-high score of 39.275 in Illinois State's win at Bowling Green. Labat's score was aided by first-place finishes on bars and vault with identical scores of 9.825 and she also tied for second on beam with a 9.825. She wrapped up her day with a 9.800 on floor to finish with a season best. Her performance helped the Redbirds post season-best team scores on vault, bars and floor and a team-high total score of 195.225.
Kipp competed in the all-around for the first time in her career and finished just behind Labat with a score of 39.200 to come in second place overall. She posted career highs on vault (9.750) and bars (9.800) and competed on floor for the first time in her career, tying for second place with a 9.825.Â
The Redbirds return home Friday, February 11, to host in-state rival Northern Illinois at Redbird Arena. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. and students in attendance can receive a free hat as part of the on-going Haturday promotion.
