Redbirds Sweep Weekly MIC Honors

NORMAL, Ill. – It was a clean sweep of the Midwest Independent Conference honors on Wednesday for Illinois State, as the Redbirds either won or shared each of the league's three weekly awards.

For the fourth week in a row, Angelica Labat was named the MIC Gymnast of the Week and upped her season total to five overall. Freshman Alana Laster, who had earned MIC Newcomer of the Week honors the previous two weeks, was named the conference's co-Performance of the Week. Wrapping things up was freshman Jaye Mack, who earned her second MIC Newcomer of the Week honor this season.

Labat tied her career-high score of 39.475 to win the all-around in Illinois State's night victory on the road at Southeast Missouri State last Friday night. She posted three scores of 9.875 on the night, highlighted by a third-place finish on bars as the Redbirds set a new team season-high score. She also placed second on vault with a 9.850 to tie her career high of 39.475 set last year at the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional. Overall, Labat has now won the all-around in six straight meets and has won the event in nine meets this season.

Laster shared the MIC Performance of the Week honor with Southeast Missouri's Jolie Miller, who scored a 9.950 on bars against the Redbirds. Laster had a huge night against the Redhawks, setting a pair of career bests on way to a third-place finish in the all-around with a score of 38.800. Her night was highlighted by a pair of scores over 9.900, including her career-best score of 9.950 to win the vault competition. That score is the highest individual score of the season in any event for a Redbird this season. She also added a career-high 9.900 finish on floor to tie for third overall.

Mack continues to have a great debut season for the Redbirds, as she posted a pair of season bests against SEMO. Mack went big on floor, posting a new career-high score of 9.925 to finish in second place overall, and she tied a season best on beam with a 9.725. Mack also picked up a third-place finish for the Redbirds on vault with a 9.825 behind two of her ISU teammates.

The Redbirds have a big opportunity ahead of them this weekend, as they travel to Provo, Utah, to take on No. 14 ranked BYU and No. 35 ranked Washington in a tri-meet Friday night at 8 p.m.
