NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State Track & Field is set to host its first of two home meets on the 2022 outdoor season as the 'Birds will host the Redbird Invite from April 1-2. Action from the Redbird Track & Field Complex will begin on Friday at 2:00 p.m. CT with the hammer throw competition. The final of day of competition kicks off on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. CT with the discus.
Illinois State will welcome in teams from Ball State, Bradley, Butler, Illinois, Illinois-Wesleyan, Loyola-Chicago, Marquette, Notre Dame, Northern Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, UW-Milwaukee, Valparaiso and Wisconsin.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Redbirds competed at a trio of meets: the Texas Relays, Raleigh Relays and Texas State Bobcat Invitational. At the meets, six Redbirds set program top-10 marks in their respective events.
Opening his final outdoor season as a Redbird, senior thrower Logan Calvin launched a personal best throw of 19.54m (64-1.25 ft.) in the shot put at the Texas Relays to earn a fourth-place finish. Calvin's mark was the second-farthest shot put throw in Illinois State outdoor track & field history. His throw ranks No. 3 in the NCAA and in the West Region.
Sophomore Ariel Atias threw a personal best in the men's javelin with a mark of 63.64m (208-9 ft.) to finish fifth overall in section B. With his throw, Atias ranks No. 4 in school history, No. 17 in the West Region and No. 52 in the NCAA this season.
At Texas State, fifth-year senior Kameesha Smith cleared 1.78m (5-10 ft.) in the women's high jump, matching her outdoor personal best in the event. Her mark is tied for No. 7 in the West Region and No. 13 in the NCAA on the season.
With a mark of 7.19m (23-7.25 ft.), junior Caleb Miedema leapt to a new personal best and finished fourth overall in the men's long jump at the Bobcat Invitational. His jump now ranks ninth in school history.
After a successful indoor campaign in which she set personal bests in both the 800m and mile run, redshirt sophomore Rachel Hickey opened up the outdoor season with a personal best in the 1500m at the Raleigh Relays, clocking a time of 4:26.23 to finish first in heat eight. Hickey's time now ranks No. 7 in school history.
Making his Illinois State debut on the outdoor track, junior Joseph Morrison clocked a time of 3:47.18 in the 1500m in Raleigh to finish 39th overall in a field of 200 competitors. Morrison's time now ranks as ninth in school history.
MVC WEEKLY HONORS
Following his performance at the Texas Relays, Logan Calvin was named the MVC Male Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.
In addition to Calvin's huge personal best in the shot put, he also competed in the hammer throw at the Bobcat Invitational, where he finished 10th with a mark of 56.41m (185-1 ft.).
After being named Male Field Athlete of the Week, Calvin has now won weekly honors nine times in his Redbird career.
