NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State Swim and Dive continues its fall slate this weekend when the Redbirds head east to take on Ohio in a two-day meet with the Bobcats.
Teams are set to compete in a unique setup this weekend that includes short course competition on Friday and long course exhibition races Saturday morning in an effort to earn Olympic Trial cuts for the 2024 Summer Games.
Action is set to get underway at 4 p.m. CT on Friday, which will include the 3M dive. 1M diving begins Saturday at 8 a.m. CT before the long course exhibition begins at 10 a.m. CT.
LAST TIME OUT
The Redbirds rolled to a 188-86 win over Eastern Illinois to open the season at Horton Pool last Friday.
Ten different Redbirds took home an event win in the dual as Illinois State won 15 of 16 events. Notably, Senior Cassidy Carey and Junior Diana Walker won multiple events in the pool while Eva Reyes swept both diving events.
THE FIRST OF MANY
Following the strong showing in the season opener Reyes earned Valley Diver of the Week honors, as announced Thursday by the league office. It's the seventh time Reyes has earned Valley Diver of the Week honors in her career and the second straight season she has earned the league's first Diver of the Week award of the season.
Reyes kept her career undefeated home 1M record intact with a total score of 269.18 Friday, which qualified Reyes for her third straight trip to NCAA Zones. The win moved her career record to 5-0 at home on the 1M boards.
She also turned in a mark of 258.75 to earn a win in the 3M dive for her ninth-career sweep of both diving events. The win improved Reyes to 4-1 in her career at home in 3M.
WALK(ER)ING ON SUNSHINE
Walker led Illinois State in the dual vs Eastern Illinois, helping the Redbirds earn three victories.
She turned in a mark of 10:41.71 to take first place in the 1000y Freestyle to open her junior campaign. She followed that up with a mark of 53.34 to secure her first career win in the 100y Freestyle. Walker also helped Illinois State to a win in the 200y Freestyle relay with a mark of 10:41.71.
KEEP CALM AND CAREY ON
Carey kicked off her senior year with two backstroke wins last Friday.
She posted a mark of 57.94 in the 100y Backstroke and 2:04.26 in the 200y Backstroke, in which she is the active school record holder, for the pair of victories.
SYLVIA'S FIRST WIN
Freshman Sylvia Admire made her collegiate debut vs Eastern Illinois and helped Illinois State to a pair of wins.
She earned her first career victory with a time of 1:57.60 in the 200y Freestyle. Admire also swam the final leg of the Redbirds' 200y Freestyle, which won with a time of 1:38.72 on Friday.
