Redbirds Close Strong at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas – On a day where low scoring was at a premium, the Illinois State men's golf team closed play at the 2022 Border Olympics, placing 11th place in the strong field.

Nationally ranked Baylor (30th) took the team title with a three-round score of 856 ahead of tournament host Houston's 871. Michigan (879), ULM (880), Coastal Carolina (881), Wright State (885), Louisiana Tech (888), Sam Houston (889), New Mexico State (892), and Rice (893) finished just ahead of ISU's 894. Lamar (907). Bowling Green (909), Miami (Ohio) (910), Western Carolina (910), UTRGV (915), and Houston Christian (922) rounded out the 17 schools in the field.

Behind an even-par final round of 72, Alex McCulla was the team's top individual finisher, tying for 34th overall with a 54-hole score of 224, while Parker Wisdom and Felix van Dijk each finished with a 225, tying for 42nd. Valentin Peugnet tied for 45th with a three-round 226, while Jack Paeglow was the team's fifth finisher on the three days with a 229 to tie for 58th.

McCulla was never over par on the day, as he opened strong with back-to-back pars and then followed with three birdies and nine pars over his next 11 holes to drop to three strokes under par. He held on despite hitting the difficult portion of the course and closed at even par for the 18 holes.

van Dijk's final-round 79 saw three birdies and nine pars on the round, and his 225 is tied for the second-lowest on the squad.

Wisdom tied with van Dijk in the team's final standing with the 225, and he closed his tournament with a five-over 77 in which he had two birdies, 11 pars and five over-par scores on the day.

Peugnet's final-round 76 saw him card four birdies and nine pars, closing his tournament with a 10-over 226, as Paeglow carded a 77 to close the day with four birdies and five pars, finishing with a 13-over 229.

The Redbirds return to the course on Saturday, March 4 when the team competes in the Desert Mountain Collegiate, hosted in Scottsdale, Arizona and hosted by the University of Michigan.
