NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State freshman Nirel Bart-Williams capped off the regular season with her fourth weekly conference honor of the season, as she was named the Midwest Independent Conference Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday.
The Newcomer of the Week honor is the third of the year for Bart-Williams, who also earned MIC Performance of the Week once during the year to up her total to four. Also joining the Redbird freshman as MIC honorees this week are TWU's Steelie King (Gymnast of the Week), SEMO's Nyah Reader (Performance of the Week) and Centenary's Leilani Johnson (Coaches Choice).
Bart-Williams was solid once again for the Redbirds in their tri-meet last Saturday with top-25 ranked foes Kentucky and Illinois. Bart-Williams rallied for a 9.900 on floor to propel her to a score of 38.525 in the all-round to finish fifth overall behind two Kentucky gymnasts and her teammates Angelica Labat and Alana Laster. Bart-Williams has competed in the all-around in every meet for the Redbirds this season and currently ranks No. 2 in the MIC in the all-around with a NQS of 38.935.Â
Next up for the Redbirds is the 2023 MIC Championships hosted by Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. at Houck Field House.
