SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Illinois State men's golf team is 11th overall after one full round, as the second round was stopped because of darkness at the 2023 Desert Mountain Collegiate.
The Redbirds carded an opening-round 298, ahead of UConn, South Dakota State, USC, DePaul, and Central Michigan and are within seven strokes of the top four in the field, including within striking distance of Nebraska and Michigan.
ISU is just over halfway through their second round when it was stopped because of darkness, and the round will resume tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. CT
The squad was led in the opening round by Jack Paeglow, who carded an opening-round 73, a round in which he was under par for 16 of the 18 holes on the round. He had five birdies and nine pars on the round – tied for the third-lowest round of his career.
Playing as an individual, Will Troy's opening-round 74 has him tied for 36th in the tournament field. Troy's round had five birdies and seven pars, finishing the opening round two strokes over par.
Valentin Peugnet, Alex McCulla, and Parker Wisdom each shot matching 75's in the opening round, each tied for 43rd overall. Peugnet's round saw him card two birdies and 11 pars for his 75, while McCulla's round had an eagle, two birdies, and nine pars. Wisdom carded four birdies and nine pars. The fifth score for the Redbirds came from Felix van Dijk, whose opening-round 77 has him tied for 66th in the field.
