NORMAL, Ill. – The Redbirds earned their first victory of the 2023 season on Thursday afternoon, shutting out the Eastern Illinois Panthers 1-0 in Charleston. Julia Liguore notched her second goal of the season, the second goal of her collegiate career, which was enough to lift Illinois State to the victory.
Liguore's goal came early in the first period, on a free kick to top right corner of the net. Although the only scoring in the game happened in the first five minutes, the Redbirds played strong defense to limit the Panthers shots to five, with only one on goal. Audrey Brown went the distance in goal, going 1-for-1 in saves and posting the first clean sheet of the year for the 'Birds.
The Redbirds edged the Panthers in shots, shots on goal, as well as corner kick attempts, which is only the second time this year the Birds have led in all three categories, second to Sunday against Oakland.
Illinois State Returns home to Adelaide Street Field on Sunday, September 10, against Western Illinois, looking to clinch its first home victory.
