WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-- Illinois State Swim and Dive turned in a solid performance in the opening day of competition at the 2024 Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The Redbirds totaled 30 season best times across multiple events, while setting five lifetime best times across all competition, including in the 200y IM and 50y free.
In the 200y IM, junior Giulia Basco turned in a lifetime best of 2:09.20 in the 200y IM prelims before besting her time, posting a finals time of 2:08.12 to set a new lifetime best in the event. Junior Delaney Boulden would also compete in Thursday night's final, setting her own lifetime best with a time of 2:08.74.
It would be a good morning for junior Chloe Tyler and senior Sydney Hoff in the 50y freestyle prelims as both set new lifetime bests in the event. Tyler began the day with a lifetime best time of 23.99 in her first time competing in the event while Hoff finished in a time of 24.81 to surpass her previous lifetime best of 26.17.
Finally, after swimming to a prelims time of 5:06.07 in the 500y freestyle, senior Lauren Wisdom came back strong in the evening to set a new lifetime event best with a time of 5:01.21 for a 12th place finish.
REDBIRD NOTABLE FINISHES (top 16)-
- Ella Turken, Chloe Tyler, Mia Snow, and Emma Feltzer recorded a big performance in the 200y freestyle relay. Their mark of 1:33.15 was good for fifth, beating out MVC foe Southern Illinois (7th place).
- Sophomore Sylvia Admire swam a time of 5:01.71 in the 500y freestyle 'B' finals to finish 13th as freshman Hope Westphal joined Wisdom and Admire in the event's 'B' final, finishing in 14th in a time of 5:04.51.
- Senior Mia Snow competed in the 'B' finals of the 50y freestyle, finishing 9th in a time of 23.40. Junior Ella Turken joined Snow in the event's top-16, coming in at a time of 23.73, good enough for 14th overall.
- In the 50y freestyle, senior Emma Feltzer would place fifth overall in a time of 22.99 against competition from Purdue, Florida International (FIU), and Southern Illinois.
- In the 3-meter diving competition, a pair of Redbirds finished in the top-11. Senior Eva Reyes posted a final score of 261.38 as sophomore Selena Corona would post a final score of 232.80.

The Redbirds will continue day two of the Purdue Invitational inside Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. Swimming Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. The finals session will start at 5 p.m. Swimming will be followed with team diving competition beginning at 5:15 p.m., before the Springboard diving finals conclude the day at 5:50 p.m.
