Terre Haute, Ind. – In a preview of the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference Championships in May, the Illinois State track and field squad competed Friday in Terre Haute on day one of the Gibson Invitational.

On the men's side in the hammer throw, senior Josh Schmid took first in the event as he tossed a mark of 52.89m (173-6.00), while junior Anthony Smith finished in ninth place with a toss of 47.63m (156-3.00). Senior Payton Taylor took 11th with a mark of 47.43m (155-7.00), as freshman Cole Stevens finished 15th with a throw of 45.53m (149-4.00).
On the track, senior Tyler Polak ran to a season-best time of 9:14.04 in the steeplechase as he finished in fourth place overall. Freshman Carter Smott also set a personal-best time of 15:18.48 while taking third in the 5,000m run.
On the women's side, senior Morgan Wrublik took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 51.91m (170-03), as freshman Adi Scott finished 20th with a toss of 42.39m (139-01). Junior Olivia Birge came in 22nd with her mark of 41.99m (137-09) in the hammer throw, and freshman Laney Lester finished 28th with a throw of 35.37m (116-0) to round out the action. Birge also finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 37.45m (122-10) and sophomore Reece Davis took 12th with a mark of 32.78m (107-6.00).

Action on day two of the Gibson Invitational will begin at 11:30 a.m., while a group of student-athletes will begin competing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the LSU Gold Alumni Meet at 10:00 a.m.
