Redbirds Conclude Day Two of Drake Relays and Kip Janvrin Invite

Des Moines, Iowa - Highlighted by two Redbirds moving up in the top-10 list, the Illinois State track & field squads finished a rainy day two of the Drake Relays and Kip Janvrin Invite.

Drake Relays 

With a slight delay due to heav  thunderstorms in the Des Moines area, the Redbirds came out of the eye of the storm with notable top-10 finishes. 

On the men's side Senior Mathis Chavand finished fifth in the 1,500m run with a personal-best time of 3:46.11, which puts him eighth best in program history. The 4x1,600m relay squad finished fourth with a time of 16:59.36, while the 4x100 relay squad advanced to the finals after they qualified by finishing sixth with a time of 41.04 seconds. Sophomore Dewayne Johnson advanced to the finals with his qualifying time of 14.04 seconds, Johnson will compete in the finals on Saturday. Freshman Garrett Taylor took 10th in the discus with a mark of 51.05m (167-6). Sophomore Rob Pulliam finished 12th in the high jump after clearing a mark of 1.98m (6-6), while senior Amiri Buchanan took fourth in the shot put with a mark of 18.13m (59-5.75). 


On the women's side senior Hassy Fashina-Bombata finished third in the 400m hurdles with a personal-best of 59.15 seconds, which gives her third best in school history. The 4x1,600m relay squad finished with a time of 20:00.97, as they took sixth place. Senior Bayta Butler finished 16th in the discus throw with a toss of 42.40m (139-1), Butler also finished seventh in the shot put with a mark of 14.24m (46-8.75). Junior Windsor Roberts finished 15th in the pole vault as she cleared a height of 3.62m (11-10.5), and senior Macy Byer took sixth in the discus throw with a toss of 49.54m (162-6). 

Kip Janvrin Invite

Three student-athletes competed today at the Kip Janvrin Invite in Indianola, Iowa, including senior Jaiden Johnson winning the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.31 seconds, and junior Caleb Lerus finishing fourth in the 400m as he crossed the finish line in 49.01 seconds. Freshman Sam Atkinson took eighth in the 800m with a time of 1:55.47.

Day three of the Drake Relays continues tomorrow with competition starting at 10:30 AM with the hammer throw competition.
