Wabi, Jones Named MIC Weekly Award Recipients

NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State picked up a dual-meet win last weekend over Greenville, scoring 195.275 for the third-highest team score of the season. That performance was thanks in part to a pair of strong meets from senior Sara Wabi and junior Jaly Jones, who were named MIC weekly award honorees on Wednesday.

Wabi was named the MIC Gymnast of the Week for the first time in her career, while Jones took home MIC Newcomer of the Week honors for the fifth time this season. 

Wabi competed in the all-around for the first time in her career and went on to take the top spot in Illinois State's dual-meet win over Greenville on Friday night. The Chicago, Illinois, native won the all-around with a career-high score of 38.500, which was aided by three top 5 individual finishes. Her best performance of the night came on bars, where she tied for first place with a 9.850. She also added fourth place finishes on vault and floor to round out a strong meet.

Jones was solid once again for the Redbirds in their dual-meet win over Greenville, as the Lindenwood transfer picked up a second-place finish on beam for the Redbirds with a 9.825 and added a seventh-place finish on floor with a 9.700. 

The Redbirds will travel east on Interstate 74 to compete against a pair of Big Ten Conference foes in host Illinois and Washington on Friday, February 22, at 1 p.m. in Champaign.
