ST LOUIS – Illinois State's Addison Martin earned MVC Newcomer of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the league office on Monday. She reached double-figures in a pair of performances last week that lifted the Redbirds to 8-2 in MVC play this season.
Martin averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game on 15-for-22 (68.1%) shooting, leading Illinois State to wins over Southern Illinois and Missouri State to extend the Redbird win streak to a season-high five games.
She posted a season-high 23 points against the Salukis, her first game of 20+ points this season, to go with 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 9-for-11 (81%) shooting in the win. Martin is one of just six Valley players to post a game of 20+ points on better than 80% shooting in an MVC game this season and the only newcomer to post that stat line. Martin shot 6-for-11 (54.5%) from the floor to go with 12 points in the win over Missouri State Sunday, shooting better than 50% from the field for the tenth-straight time to open MVC play. She is the only player in the league to shoot at least 50% from the field in 10 MVC games this season.
Martin leads the league shooting 65.0% this season and 72.0% in Valley play. She is averaging 12.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in league play this year.
It is the fifth time a Redbird has won MVC Newcomer of the Week this season, the most of any team. Illinois State has earned consecutive MVC Newcomer of the Week honors, after Elyce Knudsen did so last week. Martin becomes one of two league players to earn three MVC Newcomer of the Week honors this season, along with Southern Illinois' Gift Uchenna.
