Redbirds Close Regular Season in Champaign

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Illinois State track & field squad closed the regular season with multiple event wins at the Illini Last Chance meet on Friday afternoon. 

MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE

Senior Maggie Reed won the mile race with a season-best time of 4:57.62. Sophomore Astrid Van Breedam took bronze, while freshman Cameron Crump ran a personal-record time of 5:18.46 to place eighth.

SPRINTS/HURDLES

Sophomore Sydney Skarich was the only athlete to compete in the women's 60m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 9.50.

Sophomore Kristyn Johnson was also the only runner to compete in the 60m dash, recording a time of 7.86. In the men's 60m dash, Aidan Wyzard took bronze with a season-best time of 7.04. Sophomores Loris Tonella (7.12) and Trey Thomas (7.37, PR) finished in fourth and fifth.

JUMPS/THROWS

In the women's pole vault, senior Isabelle Hemmen earned seventh with a personal-record clearance of 3.85m, moving her into a tie for seventh in program history. Junior Joycelyn Crum took eighth, also with a throw of 3.85m, to tie for seventh in the ISU record books.

In the men's long jump, the Redbirds swept the top four spots. Freshman Aidan Wyzard won the event with a season-best jump of 7.16m. Freshman Brody Rigdon took runner-up with a personal-record mark of 7.15m. Freshman Rex Hallam earned bronze with a season-best mark of 6.99m, and junior Ryan Schaefer took fourth with a season-best jump of 6.92m.

On the women's side, the Redbirds took the fourth through eighth-place spots, with senior Abby Milott and sophomore Laney Nelson finishing in the top five in the long jump.

Freshman Voldy Makabu was the lone athlete to compete in the men's high jump, recording a leap of 2.05m.

In the women's triple jump, junior Ava Lawless took first, and sophomore Laney Nelson claimed runner-up. On the men's side, sophomore Victor Byaundaombe won the event with a jump of 14.62m.

Junior Cole Stevens threw a season-best mark of 18.46m to place third in the weight throw, while junior transfer Isaias Lopez took fourth with a personal-record throw of 16.74m. On the women's side, sophomores Brianna Brodie, Morgan Foes and Chidiogo Odeluga placed second, third and fourth, respectively.

Three Redbird women and three men placed in the top five in the shot put, with Kiera Fax (14.06m) and Jacob Klink (17.70m) leading each group with runner-up finishes.

The Birds will begin postseason competition with the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Indianapolis on March 1-2.
