Senior co-captain Alfie Gordillo was named the Missouri Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week for his performance in the 35-lb. weight throw at the Early Bird Invitational on December 7.
Gordillo, a native of Park Forest, Ill., set a NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a heave of 64-10 1/2. The mark also gave him the top spot on the Valley best list for the weight throw.
Illinois State finished second behind Indiana State at the Early Bird Invitational, which was the first meet of the indoor season for the Birds.
The next meet for Illinois State will be the Illinois Invitational on January 12, 2002, in Champaign, Ill.
