Redbirds Finish Up Competition in Indiana, California

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Illinois State track and field closed out a strong showing at the Gibson Invitational on Saturday at the Gibson Track and Field Complex, setting three meet records and capturing multiple event titles.

Leading the way for the Redbirds, Isabelle Hemmen continued her impressive season in the pole vault, clearing 3.99m to win the event. Her mark not only improved her standing at fifth in program history but also broke the previous meet record of 3.95m.

Illinois State's 4x100m relay team of Reece Curtis, Enyinnaya Nwagwu Jr., Jaiden Reed and Zach Paul also made history, clocking a meet-record time of 39.92. The performance moves the quartet up to third all-time in program history.

Nwagwu added another highlight on the track, winning the 200m dash with a season-best time of 20.85 to secure the Redbirds' third meet record of the day.

The Redbirds continued to find success across the board, with Paul claiming the 100-meter title in 10.17, and the 4x400m relay team of Jake Welch, Evan Watson, Reed and Nwagwu taking first place with a time of 3:12.41.

Illinois State also turned in several notable performances in the field.

Seth Nelson secured a victory in the men's pole vault with a clearance of 5.21m.

Aidan Wyzard recorded a personal-best jump of 7.27m to finish second in the invitational section of the long jump, moving into 10th place in program history.

Rex Hallam added another event title for the Redbirds, winning the collegiate section of the long jump with a mark of 6.90m.

The Redbirds finished up their time in California with the 1500m on Saturday evening. Becca Heitzig improved her first place time in school history and placed eighth out of 119 finishers with a time of 4:14.76.

Pauline Schedler wasn't far behind in 14th place, moving from third to second in program history with a mark of 4:15.89.

Mattison Plummer also performed well, jumping from seventh to sixth in school history with a time of 4:23.92.

The Redbirds will be back in action on Friday, April 24, at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
