Goy Qualifies for NCAA Championship

Illinois States Christian Goy placed fourth in the mile ahead of Olympians Yossef Gezachw and Gabriel Jennings with a time of 4:03. 34, meeting the NCAA qualifying standard, at the Iowa State Classic Saturday afternoon. The mens mile was one of the hottest events of the weekend, head coach Jeff Pigg said. Christian ran very well against some great competition. Sophomore Chivas Hemphill jumped a personal best in the long jump with a lead of 4802 3/4 for seventh-place while Alfie Gordillo finished eighth in the 35-lb. weight throw with a heave of 63 feet. On the womens side, all-American Kathrine Nielsen tied her personal best as she soared over 57 3/4 in the high jump for tenth-place. Nicole Blow led the horizontal jumpers with a leap of 390 1/2, good for ninth in the triple jump. This was a very high-powered meet, and Im extremely pleased with the way we performed, Pigg said. The most exciting thing is the number of kids at their season best right now. It seems like every time we stepped on the track something exciting happened. This definitely the type of meet you want right before the conference meet. Were right where we want to be. Redbird athletes not competing at Iowa State participated at the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Open. Egle Kregzdyte and Jen Klostermann took fist and second in the 800 meters with times of 2:16.43 and 2:21.26, respectively, while Melanie Zimmerman and Dineisha Norman accomplished the same feat in the triple jump with distances of 11.38 and 10.98 meters. Sophomore Lauren Ritt took third in the 400 with a time of 1:00.81. Dan Schrock and Eric Duda ran one-two in the mens 800 with 1:56.06 and 1:56.27. Freshman Andrew Jury high jumped a season best at 69 for first place and was followed by Ryan Meister in third with a jump of 64. Lots of our athletes got the personal or season bests today, Pigg added. Its going to be a great conference meet. The Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships await the Redbirds February 23 and 24 at Southern Illinois.
