After competing at the Cardinal Invite last weekend, the distance runners take the weekend off as the rest of the team returns to competition Saturday at the Missouri Relays at Columbia, Mo.
Missouri provides a good competitive environment for everyone, Assistant Coach Mary Wallace said. Everyone from the freshmen to the all-conference to the All-Americans on the team will be pushed a little this weekend.
Last weekend the distance runners competed at the Cardinal Invite in Palo Alto, Calif., with All-American miler Christian Goy leading the charge for the Redbirds, taking third place in the mens 1,500 meters with a school-record 3:42.19.
This weekend is an opportunity for everyone to compete and get some work in, Wallace said. Weve still got to work some of the kinks out in some events. The important thing is that we continue to make progress.
After strong performances by the jumpers at Alabama, Jarod Tobler and Casey Gantt both hope to improve on their last performances. Tobler took 12th in the long jump and 10th in the triple jump at the Alabama Relays, while Gantt placed 13th in the triple jump.
All-American Sam Serrano took sixth place in the womens hammer throw and Harry Lattimore captured 11th in the mens shot put at Alabama.
We are definately on the right track so far, Wallace said. Its just a matter of getting adjusted to being back outdoors and continuing to improve as the season goes along.
Action begins on Saturday with the mens hammer throw at 8 a.m. Wichita, State, Missouri, Central Missouri and UMKC are among the teams competing.
