Six Redbirds Take First-Place Honors At Missouri Relays

All-American Christian Goy, who took first in the mens 1,500 meters, was one of six Redbirds to take first-place honors in their events at the Missouri Relays in Columbia, Mo., Saturday. Also leading the charge for Illinois State was Rob Breit, Kevin Bailey, Monique Haan, Casey Gantt and Alia Hoyle. All-American Christian Goy, who took first in the mens 1,500 meters, was one of six Redbirds to take first-place honors in their events at the Missouri Relays in Columbia, Mo., Saturday. Also leading the charge for Illinois State was Rob Breit, Kevin Bailey, Monique Haan, Casey Gantt and Alia Hoyle. Goy clocked a 3:52.61 to take first place in the mens 1,500 meters, nearly six seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Clocking a 15:50.24, Breit was able to claim first in the mens 5,000, while Bailey led the way in the mens 3,000 meter steeplechase as the Redbirds had the top four finishers. Bailey was followed by Walter Ogola, Todd Quednau and Jason Brown, respectively. Placing second in the womens 200 meter dash with a time of 25.07, Hoyle finished just two one-hundreths of a second behind Drakes Melissa Childs. Hoyle won her event in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.18. Haan and sophomore Melanie Zimmerman finished one-two in the womens triple jump, with Haan setting a meet record of 11.82 meters. Also breaking a meet record was All-American Sam Serrano in the womens discus, tossing a 43.12, which was good for second place. Serrano also took second in both the hammer throw and shot put. Freshman Casey Gantt leapt his way into first place, jumping an impressive 14.62 meters in the mens triple jump, while fellow Redbirds Jarod Tobler and Chivas Hemphill placed fifth and sixth, respectively. In the womens 800 meters Andrea Black neared a career best finishing second with a time of 2:16.17, while Bryan Smith also took second in the mens 100 meter dash, finishing in just under 11 seconds at 10.95. The Illinois State Track and Field teams return to action next Saturday at the Western Illinois Invitational in Macomb, Ill.
