The Illinois State track and field team turned in some impressive individual and team performances Saturday at the IWU Relays in Bloomington, Ill.
Senior co-captains Sam Serrano and Alfie Gordillo continued their throwing dominance this season by both improving on their NCAA Indoor Championship provisional qualifying marks and achieving first place in the weight throw. In the 20-lb. weight throw, Serrano earned a mark of 18.28 meters, while Gordillo claimed a 19.91 in the 35-lb. weight.
Robin Whalen won the women's pole vault after clearing 3.25 meters. Hillary Hyland added a win in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.51 meters. Melanie Zimmerman won the triple jump with a mark of 11.52 meters.
Liz Chukwudebe won the womens' shot after posting a mark of 13.85 meters and Brandon Lowell took home the men's high jump title after clearing 2.01 meters. Chivas Hemphill claimed the men's triple jump competition at 14.52 meters.
Other noteworthy performances by the Redbirds include: wins in the mens and womens distance medleys, mens and womens 4X800 meter relays, mens and womens 4X400 meter relays and the mens and womens 4X200 meter relays.
The Redbirds travel to Madison, Wis., on Saturday, January 26, to compete in the Wisconsin Invitational.
