Redbirds Battle Rainy Conditions at Drake Relays

A rain storm moved into the Des Moines area on the final day of the Drake Relays Saturday, but Illinois State wasnt about to leave town early just because of bad weather. The Redbirds toughed out the adverse conditions and will now prepare for one final meet before heading to the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in three weeks. Once you are at a meet, I dont care if its raining, I think you have to stay and finish, Illinois State track and field head coach Elvis Forde said. This is the environment we were dealt with and Im not going to pull the kids out because of rain. One week after qualifying for the NCAA Regional meet, Jeremy Doherty had another decent showing in the 1,500-meter run, placing third with a time of 3:50.63. Miklos Konkoly finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.71. The mens sprint medley team of Camari Brown, Tyler Gaumer, Bronco Meeks and Walker Eye finished 15th with a time of 3:32.45, while the distance medley team of Doherty, Gaumer, Gabe Cruz and Dan Tripp finished eighth with a time of 10:02.40. On the womens side the sprint medley team of Brittney Hourd, Abby Heinhold, Amy Dian and Jen Klostermann placed tenth with a time of 4:03.91. We were on such an emotional high from last weekend that the performances didnt carry over to this week, Forde said. Well regroup and be prepared for the conference meet in three weeks. The Redbirds return to the state of Iowa next Saturday for the Musco Twilight Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
