Katie Laehn captured medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 220, while teammate Chelsea Bach was right behind her with a 225 to help lead the Illinois State womens golf team to a 41-stroke victory at the ISU Redbird Classic at Illinois State University Golf Course.
The Redbirds posted a 294 team score Monday and finished with a three-round total of 899, 41 strokes ahead of Bradley and Northern Iowa, who tied for second. The Birds had five players finish in the top 10. Behind Laehn and Bach were Samantha Richdale in sixth place with a score of 230, plus Ashlee Johnson and Hilary Anderson tied for seventh place with a score of 232.
Laehn had the lead going into the final round and maintained her consistency.
I had to keep my head straight, and take each shot one at a time, said Laehn. It felt really good to work so hard and to see that hard work pay off with a win.
Head coach
Ray Kralis was pleased with how his team played after adding 19 strokes on Monday to a 22-stroke lead after the first two rounds.
We had some great performances. We got better with every round played, said Kralis. Coming into the final round leading by 22 strokes, the girls really stepped up and showed what they were made off.
The Redbirds will travel to Michigan State for the Mary Fossum Invitational on September 18-19.
