For the first time this season, Brian Krantz, a thrower on the Illinois State mens track and field team, has been honored as the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the period of April 4-10.
Krantz, a senior from Elgin, Ill., improved his regional mark in the hammer competition by throwing two feet farther than his previous best at the Big Blue Classic at Charleston, Ill., on Friday, April 8. He took second in the event with a throw of 193-11. While carrying a 3.43 cumulative grade-point average in history, he continued his stellar performance, as he also took second in the discus with a toss of 168-2.
Head track and field coach Elvis Forde is pleased with Krantz and how well he excels in the classroom and on the field.
One of the things about Brian is that hes very intense, Forde said. His intensity and efforts have been recognized as he has excelled both academically and athletically. He has done extremely well in those two areas in his time here at Illinois State.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
