NORMAL, Ill. -
At the Missouri Relays, Illinois State track and field student-athlete, Lauren Maul, took first place in the long jump on the opening day of competition.
In the long jump, Maul won the event with a personal-best jump of 19-03.50. Other notable performances on the women's squad include Samantha Springer in hammer throw and Kathleen Thompson in the 3,000-meters. Springer turned in a seventh-place finish with a personal-best throw of 158-01, while Thompson placed 12th in 10:33.67.
On the men's side, Brian Krantz recorded a regional qualifying mark (183-02) in the hammer throw for seventh-place, while Mark Jackson placed 11th with 170-01.
Alex Straughn turned added a strong performance for the Illinois State men with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump. Straughn jumped 47-07.00, competing for the first time in the event during the outdoor season.
Head track and field coach Elvis Forde was pleased with the results of today's competition, but looks forward to the full day of competition starting early Saturday morning.
"We competed pretty well today," said Forde. "Lauren had a good performance in the long jump, as did Brian with his regional qualifying mark in the hammer throw. Tomorrow we have a full day ahead of us and I'm excited to see how we compete."
A full schedule of events awaits the Redbirds early tomorrow morning with events beginning at 9:30 a.m.
