Simpsonville, Ky. -
The Illinois Sate women's golf team held its ground as the Redbirds finished tied for eighth after posting a team total of 916 (305, 308, 303) on the final day of action at the Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup.
"Everyone played well this week," said head coach Darby Sligh. Consistency was definitely our key. We did not have anyone putting up crooked numbers and that was our problem last week in Wisconsin. We feel like we are ready to play very well at Kansas State."
The Redbirds were led by junior co-captain Marci Hill who fired a final round 73 en route to a three-round-total of 226 (75, 78, 73) and a tie for 21st. Three other Redbirds joined Hill in the top-40. True Freshman Terra Miller finished tied for 32nd with a three-round-total of 229 (76, 76, 77). Sophomores Stacey Miller (75, 80, 77) and Britt Knutson (79, 77, 76) each fired 232 and finished tied for 40th.
"Marci played very well all week and it is good to see someone break through and step into a leadership role," said Sligh.
Notre Dame won the event, finishing just three strokes ahead of host Louisville. The Fighting Irish posted a three-round-total of 878 (292, 290, 296) and were led by freshman So-Hyun Park who placed first individually after a three-round-total of 213 (70, 71, 72).
Illinois State is back in action Oct. 1-2 at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational, hosted by Kansas State at the Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan.
